Cordless Drills

Power drills have been around seemingly forever and cordless power drills for 25 or 30 years, at least. However, early cordless drills weren't really much more than power screwdrivers, and if that's what you think of when someone mentions cordless drills, you're in for a surprise.

A cordless drill is a necessity to any tool collection, but what truly makes a tool collection complete are the accessories that accompany the cordless drills.

The earliest drills were bow drills which date back to the ancient Harappans and Egyptians. The drill press as a machine tool evolved from the bow drill and is many centuries old.

Cordless drills are great. You can go anywhere and don't have to worry about plugging them in. They will pretty much do anything you need them to do.

Their big advantage is the vast array of cordless tools use the same batteries and charger.

Corded drills do not depend on batteries for power. Their constant supply of electricity makes them better suited than cordless drills for tough jobs like drilling in masonry or boring large holes in wood.

Cordless drills are great tools. Anyone who has ever used a traditional corded drill that trails a cumbersome power cord knows that cordless drills are superior when it comes to overall versatility.

Anyone who has used a cordless drill has likely been impressed with the versatility and ease the tool provides to tough projects.

Cordless drills that boast 18 volts of power are rugged enough to handle a wide majority of common homeowner or do-it-yourself projects.

Before buying a cordless drill, it might make good sense to rent one for an hour or go to a store where several drills are setup and ready to use.

A drill gets heavy after holding it out for a while. You can be sure it's from the battery -- display models often don't have the battery attached. 5 pounds may not seem like much until you try it for a while.

Once you've determined what the cordless drill's primary use will be, consider all the features and select the one that has the best balance between function and flexibility.

Resolved Question: cordless drill - 1/2" vs 3/8" chuck size?
What exactly is the difference between a cordless power drill w/ a 1/2" chuck and one w/ a 3/8" chuck (besides size)? Is one side more suited for a certain type of drill work than the other? Is one usually more preferred than the other? Is one more compatible w/ drill accessories than the other? I'm looking to buy a drill as a gift, for someone who would use it for various home maintenance needs. Thanks.
