Once limited to making light-duty holes or cuts in wood, cordless tools can now handle all-day use in framing lumber or dense building materials like plywood, metal, and even masonry.

For the woodworker in you, there are DeWalt tools everywhere, from table saws, compound miter saws and bench grinders to corded and cordless routers, sanders, drills, circular saws, reciprocating saws and flashlights.

Cordless routers are now a reality and at least two makers are breaking new ground with power miter saw tools that were originally not only corded but also stationary.

A charging station on the passenger-side wall keeps all the cordless tool batteries pumped up, ready to use.

Since a plunge router can do the same tasks as a fixed-base router, some expert reviews advise buying a plunge router if you must choose only one, even though they’re a bit more complicated to learn to use. Plunge routers have two spring-loaded columns that retract the cutting bit above the base, and then let you plunge the bit down straight into the wood.

A second method is to use the router for plunge cuts, where the bit plunges down into the material vertically. This allows you to cut shapes, including square mortises into the wood without starting from an edge. A plunge router is needed for this type of cutting.

In past years, fixed-base rather than plunge routers have been recommended most for use in a router table.
