A gasoline-powered portable stump grinder is handy when you have lots of stumps to remove. They are powered by a chain saw motor and have carbide teeth that can be resharpened or replaced. They can grind through a stump in much less time than it would be needed to dig it out.

The tree stump grinder (cutter) is passed back and forth over the tree stump hydraulically, and slowly grinds away the tree stump, inches at a time. After grinding out the tree stump, you are left with a controlled pile of dirt and small chips. What's great about tree stump grinding is that it creates mulch which you can then use around your yard in flowerbeds, gardens and around trees.

Most small walk-behind stump grinders have an elongated frame with wheels and an engine near the center, a handle for the operator at one end and a cutting wheel at the other end. The cutting wheel can be mounted in a horizontal or vertical orientation. The cutting wheel does not saw the stump; rather, it grinds the stump by reducing the stump to chips. It goes without saying that protective eyewear is a must.

Some stump grinders, especially some obsolete models that may still be in service, have the cutting wheel on the same end of the machine as the operator. The manufacturers of this type claim better visibility of the cutting wheel, but this design is extremely dangerous as there have been dozens of serious injuries from this type of stump grinder.

Obviously the first consideration is to use only stump grinders with the cutting wheel on the end opposite the operator. A further consideration isnot to use a small walk-behind stump grinder unless you are physically fit and reasonably strong.

The nice thing about using a skid steer is that you can bring the bucket and set it down opposite of the side your going to come into grind from, drop it ,pick up the grinder and you catch a majority of the chips in the bucket.
